This one time I was thinking about wedding rings. Obviously the engagement ring is the most important ring and the one that gets the most attention and is talked about the most. The wedding ring is just an afterthought. No one really cares about the wedding ring as much. It's not like a woman gets engaged and all her friends say "Oooh, I like your engagement ring, but what will you wedding ring look like? That's what I really want to know."
Obviously the wedding ring is still essential because of the symbolism it carries. Actually, in the past it was only women who received a wedding ring, which makes even less sense than today, when both the man and woman get a wedding ring. Why would a women get an engagement ring, and then a wedding ring? The man wasn't getting one to match so she was the only one getting a ring. Why would she get another one?
Today, it is common for the man and woman to exchange wedding rings. The woman gets an engagement ring, of course, but then they both get a wedding ring. The wedding rings match and symbolize commitment to each other.
Here's another question: are engagement rings just for show? I will think post some thoughts about this in my next post.
